Do you remember what you eat during the day on March 8, 1999? What about the clothes you wear on October 29, 1985?
A group of people,as long as there are only 33 people can remember until such detail, considering almost every moment of their lives after the age of 10 years is amazing. Scientists call them have a very superior autobiographical memory. And now scientists have discovered what makes the brains of these people special.
Researchers at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) studied 11 people who have the condition and nine marks the peculiar structure of their brains. The difference in their brains with the brains 'normal' associated with autobiographical memory. Those who have a basic ganglia brain nerve cells (white matter) that are healthier connects the middle and front of the brain compared with other subjects.
Anomalies of the brain gives scientists "are descriptive and coherent story of what is happening" in the brains of people with high recall abilities, according to researchers Aurora LePort UCI said in a statement.
"The next step is to understand the mechanisms behind memory," said LePort. "Is it the brain that have different ways of communication? Maybe these genetic influences. Probably also in terms of molecules."
This phenomenon is called hyperthymesia first described by scientists in 2006 and these people, including the actress in the movie "Taxi" Marilu Henner, coverage appeared in the program "60 Minutes".
Since the condition was discovered, UCI researchers have examined more than 500 people who have superior autobiographical memory. There were 33 confirmed cases, including 11 people involved in the study. Even so there are 37 other candidates are to undergo further tests.
The researchers noted that people with super-memory condition does not stand out from the regular tests of memory and has a super memory differently from those who can remember a long list of facts and figures.
"They are not experts memories. Precisely 180 degrees different from the champions reminder to memorize Pi to the longest number or series of numbers a lot. This exciting project, that we are referring to a specific form of memory."
The findings are described in detail in the journal Neurobiology of Learning & Memory July issue.
